Boating Electronics for Newcomers

Although there are many types of boating electronics, there are really only three boat electronics basics that are necessary to enhance safety and make boating more enjoyable. You should begin with a VHF marine radio, a GPS system, and a fish finder.

Marine VHF Radios

Although boats that are less than 65 feet in length don’t have to include VHF radios, everyone should actuallly have this equipment. Those who plan to go more than a couple of miles off shore should seriously consider adding an HF or single side band mobile satellite phone or radiotelephone, along with an EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon), and a back-up VHF radio or cell phone too. The satellite phones are becoming more reasonably priced, and give easier conversations than the popular HF radio phone, but the High Frequency phone will also pick up weather warnings. You can have these boating electronics without having an FCC ship station license, unless you plan on making international voyages. On your VHF radio, you have to maintain a watch on channel 16 or VHF channel 9, the boater calling channel. Urgent data, like storm warnings, are broadcast on channel 9 only in some waters.

GPS Systems

If you have a Global Positioning Satellite receiver for your car or for hiking, then you know just how useful they can be. You can get GPS systems that are portable or mounted on your boat. Fish finders can be both mounted or handheld. The mounted ones are generally more expensive and are available in dual frequency models, which allow more accurate fish to depth readings.

Combination Units

You can buy units that combine GPS and fish finders. These have the advantage of generally saving money over buying separate units, and they are usually console mounted equipment.

The Development Of The Electric Bass Guitar

Although the concept of a bass guitar was first developed in the 1930s, it wasn’t until the 1950s that mass production met with popularity and the concept of an electric bass guitar became mainstream. Once the idea of an electric bass guitar took hold, and was used widely in groups and bands performing across the world, many companies began developing new styles and methods to create some fantastic ideas for the instrument, and help its popularity grow. Today the electric bass guitar has stepped forwards from the dark shadows of the back of the stage to take a much more prominent position at the front – and has become known as a very popular and stylish instrument to play. Not forgetting, of course, that the quality of sound and versatility have come a long way too.

Since it took about twenty years for the idea of an electric bass guitar to become a mainstream popular idea, it is unsurprising perhaps that it took another twenty years for the next big jump in design and innovation. It was in the 1970s that the company known as Music Man was founded by Leo Fender. It was this company that designed and created the StingRay, which was the first bass guitar to include active electronics. Although these active electronics can sound quite complex, the simple effect was to increase the range of high and low notes, and enhance the crispness of each.

In the early seventies a company called Alembic created the basic design for the high end bass guitars, known as boutique guitars. These were crafted using the highest degree of expertise, with the most highly skilled craftsmen using the finest quality materials. With unique, custom designs, the most premium woods available and some of the most innovative electronic gadgetry included, these boutique bass guitars became well known as the top guitar to have – and brought bass guitars from the back of the stage to the very front – an equal to the standard electric guitar.

Over the next thirty years the designs of electric bass guitars have varied, with new innovations, odd and unusual features and designs, including a headless bass by Ned Steinberger, who also introduced the Trans-Trem tremolo bar. A few years later the Guild Guitar Corporation introduced the astonishing fretless bass, known as the Ashbory. Quite how a guitar would work without frets would challenge any sane thinker – but the Ashbory used silicone rubber strings, with a piezoelectric pickup. The result of this was a sound more like a double bass than an electric guitar.

It was in the nineties that five string basses became popular, and prices began to reduce quite significantly, seeing pre-amplifiers built in to most bass guitars – previously something reserved for the higher end guitar. Today we see electric bass guitars include digital modelling circuits actually built in to the guitar – almost like having a computer built in to the body of the guitar, and able to enhance, distort, amplify and altar the voice of the guitar in such a way that it is possible to program the guitar to sound like any of the well known types of guitar available previously.

Electronic Cigarette Reviews Green Smoke Vs Blu Cigs

I began my journey writing electronic cigarette reviews by purchasing a Green Smoke starter kit in December 2010. Then two months later, in January, I bought a Blu Cigs starter kit. Today I want to discuss the primary differences between these two key brands.

Introduction

For starters, both Green Smoke and Blu Cigs are the top two e-cigarette manufacturers in the entire world. As such, they’re based in the United States. Blu Cigs specifically caters to U.S. citizens, whereas Green Smoke prides itself on delivering to smokers from all across the world, including France, Egypt, and even China.

Obtaining My Kit

To write electronic cigarette reviews, you have to actually dabble with the products. So I ordered my Green Smoke kit in December and was pleasantly surprised to discover it outside two days later. Blu Cigs, on the other hand, I ordered a month later, and I was quite disappointed because my e-cigarette kit took ten tediously lond days to arrive. So when it comes to delivery, Green is the winner.

The Starter Kit

My Green Smoke starter kit included one battery, two chargers, and five cartridges, whereas my Blu Cigs starter kit featured two batteries, three chargers, and give cartridges. In addition, one of the Blu chargers was a ‘charging pack’ designed to not only charge an electronic cigarette, but also designed to store one e-cigarette are a few cartridges. So it was essentially a case. The winner here should be obvious!

Accessories

Green Smoke offers a bevy of accessories, including a car charger, two cases, a special pink battery, and rubber sanitation tips. Blu Cigs unfortunately only offers all the items that were in my starter kit: three chargers (none of them were a car charger) and one basic battery type. That’s disappointing.

Flavors

Green Smoke has a whopping twelve cartridge flavors, but most of them taste horrible. Mind you, other electronic cigarette reviews might disagree. I do really like their chocolate flavor, though. As for Blu Cigs, it only has four, but each of them taste like bliss: tobacco, menthol, cherry, and coffee.

Cartridges

Green Smoke cartridges are equivalent to 30 cigarettes, and they create a lot of vapor. Blu Cigs cartridges are only equivalent to 21 cigarettes, and they create slightly less vapor, though not too much less. Both cartridges come with an integrated atomizer. I found them both to be impressive in this category. The weaker 21-cig cartridge didn’t concern me simply because they’re cheaper (See Prices).

Prices

Every electronic cigarette starter kit, battery, charger, and additional accessory for Green Smoke costs a fortune, whereas every piece from Blu Cigs doesn’t cost that much at all. In particular, Green cartridges retail for $2.80 a piece, while Blu cartridges retail for $1.92. Keep in mind the latter don’t last as long.

Discounts

Since Blu is so cheap to begin with, there are no discounts. Green, however, offers a whopping 10% discount courtesy of codes such as DISC10-19544. Both e-cigarette manufacturers include an option for free shipping.

Conclusion

Most electronic cigarette reviews end up telling you which e-cigarette to buy. I’m not going to do that. It’s not a question or whether Green Smoke is better than Blu Cigs or vice versa. Rather, it’s a question of which brand is better for you. What’s more important to you? Flavor? Price? Accessory options? Discounts? What is it that you want?

I will say this. My personal electronic cigarette choice is Green Smoke. I started with them and I plan to continue with them. I sincerely believe that they have a better product. More importantly, they are the only electronic cigarette brand to offer a delicious chocolate flavor. I don’t know about you, but I love chocolate!!!
